Subclass 134 SKILL MATCHING VISA
About this Visa
The Skill Matching visa has been designed to help overcome skill shortages by helping migrants to settle in parts of Australia where their skills and abilities are in demand. This is done by placing their details in the Skill Matching Database. The database is accessed by State and Territory governments and employers who may then nominate an applicant for migration.

Who is this visa for?
This visa is for people with skills and qualifications in an occupation that is required in Australia These occupations are listed on Australia's Skilled Occupation List (SOL). The Skill Matching visa does not have a points test, but there are other requirements that must be met.

To apply for this visa types, applicants must:
 
* Be under 45 years old.
* Have an occupation listed on the skilled occupations list (most of which require a trade qualification or degree).
* Have the required amount of employment within that occupation (12/18 of the preceding months for occupations allocated 60 points on the list, 24/36 of the preceding months for occupations allocated 40-50 points on the skilled occupation list. (less work experience is required for a Designated area sponsored visa).
* If a trade qualification, degree or diploma (involving at least 1 year of full time study) has been completed in Australia within the last 6 months, work experience is not required.
* Visa's 136, 137 and 138 require the applicant to achieve the required number of points on the point's test in order to have their application considered.
* An assurance of support is required for sponsored visa's (i.e. 138, 139).
* Applicants must satisfy health and character requirements.

Australian permanent residents can:
 
* Live and work in Australia on a permanent basis.
* Study in Australia at school or university.

Subclass 136 SKILL INDEPENDENT VISA
About this Visa
This visa allows you to migrate to Australia if you are under 45 years of age, have good English language skills,
and skills and qualifications in an occupation required in Australia.

This visa uses a points test to select visa applicants with characteristics needed in the Australian labour market.
You will need to meet the applicable passmark for a visa to be granted.

Applicants for this visa do not require sponsorship.

This visa is for you if you have skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on Australia's Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

The SOL is a list of skilled occupations that are in need in Australia. Each occupation listed on the SOL is allocated a points value for use in the assessment process.

Subclass 137 STATE/TERRITORY NOMINATED INDEPENDENT VISA
  About this Visa
This visa enables participating state/territory governments to nominate skilled migration applicants who are interested in permanently settling in states and territories where their skills are in demand. There is particular demand for skilled workers in regional areas of Australia.
 
Who is this visa for?
This visa is for
 
* Skilled workers with an occupation that is required in Australia.
* Dependent family members of the skilled worker who also wish to apply for a visa.
 
You must have skills and qualifications in an occupation that is required in Australia. These occupations are listed on Australia's Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

You will need to be nominated by a participating state or territory government. The participating State or Territory governments for this visa are:
 
* South Australia
* Tasmania
* Victoria
* Western Australia
* Australian Capital Territory
* New South Wales

Each State or Territory has its own list of skill requirements depending on what skills are in demand in that state. You should check the state shortage lists before proceeding with your application.

Subclass 139 DESIGNATED AREA SPONSORED VISA
About this Visa
Important: This visa ceased on 1 July 2006 and was replaced by a two-stage visa process.

The first stage is a three year provisional visa. Subject to certain criteria, applicants can then apply for the second stage permanent visa. The following information only applies to applicants who lodged their application for this visa on or before 30 June 2006.

This visa allows you to migrate to Australia if you:
 
* Are under 45 years of age.
* Have good English language skills.
* Skills and qualifications in an occupation required in Australia.
* But are unable to meet the criteria as an Independent migrant but have an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia willing to sponsor you.
