About Occupational
English Test
The OET assesses the
English language proficiency in the
medical/ health professions of candidates
seeking admittance to training programs
and examinations. It assesses listening,
reading, writing and speaking skills.
Listening (non profession
specific)
For this subtest you are required to
listen to a tape on which two health
related issues have been recorded and
to answer questions which have been
formulated to test your comprehension
of the spoken word. Reading
(non profession specific)
For this test you are required to read
two articles about health related issues
and answer questions about them.
Writing (profession specific)
The writing and speaking components
of an OET are profession specific.
For this subtest you are required
to write a letter of referral or transfer
based on case notes which are provided
for you. You are required to write
about 200 words in correct layout.
Speaking (profession specific)
For this subtest you are required
to participate in two role plays with
an interlocutor. The role plays are
recorded on a tape.
